Abstract

This article studies personal characteristics of mothers who raise children with disabling (incapacitating) conditions (diseases). Mother’s personality has great impact on parenting style, development and rehabilitation of children. Birth of an ill child is a big stress and psychological trauma for the mother. Comparative empirical study based on a sample of 50 mothers showed that mothers who raise ill children have high levels of sensitivity, rigidity and aggression in comparison to mothers who raise healthy children. Also mothers of ill children revealed a more intense attitude to the child’s health, a desire to limit the child’s activity and hyper- or hyponosognosia of his illness. Identified features of the personality of mothers can become the basis for individual and family psychotherapy in the structure of comprehensive assistance to the family of a child with a chronic disabling (incapacitating) disease.
