Abstract

The article examines the process of recovery in addictive and behavioral disorders as a result of the interaction between the external conditions of the therapeutic environment and the emerging internal psychological mechanisms of the personality. The relevance of the study is determined by the need for a deeper understanding of how a socially organized rehabilitation environment contributes not only to temporary behavioral control but also to the development of stable internal resources that ensure the maintenance of remission. The aim of the study was to analyze the subjectively experienced external and internal conditions of recovery in patients with various forms of addictive disorders. The empirical base included the divisions of the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Mental Health in Almaty, Pavlodar, and Astana; the study involved 32 patients at different stages of treatment and recovery. The methods used included semi-structured clinical-psychological interviews and observation within a therapeutic community setting. The results showed that the therapeutic community, an empathic environment, the structured nature of daily life, participation in collective activities, elements of self-governance, and practices of mutual responsibility act as significant external conditions of recovery. As patients become more involved in the rehabilitation process, these conditions are gradually internalized and transformed into internal psychological resources. Among the key internal mechanisms of recovery are the awareness of the limitations of negative motivation as the sole basis for treatment, the acceptance of the internal problem, the development of the ability to endure emotional experiences without resorting to addictive modes of regulation, as well as the formation of a subject position, reflexivity, and self-regulation skills. It is concluded that recovery in addictive disorders is not only a clinical but also a socio-psychological process in which external forms of behavioral regulation gradually become internal supports of the personality. The obtained data expand the understanding of the mechanisms of stable remission and emphasize the importance of the therapeutic environment as a factor of long-term psychological change.
