THE IMPACT OF A TEACHER'S EMPATHY ON A STUDENT'S ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

Abstract

The article deals with the influence of the level of empathy of a university lecturer on academic performance of a student. During the analysis of recent research in this field, a scientific problem was identified and a forecast was made. Empathy was seen as a professional quality specific to the teacher, and it was found to be about identifying a student's psychological state and feeling empathy and interest in academic performance. To test the research hypothesis the teachers of Taraz State Pedagogical University and 2nd year students were involved in the experiment. According to the Longitude method, the results of enrollment of the graduate, i.e. the process of the examinee's performance, were determined by GPA analysis of the for 4 semesters, starting with the Unified National Testing (UNT). An additional survey was conducted to study the impact of the current situation in the educational space (area) of the university, the relationship with the teacher, the teachers’ empathy on the student performance. A similar survey was conducted among teachers and a comparative analysis of its results was made. Teachers with a high level of empathy are receptive, not indifferent to the problems of students, interested in the learning achievements of students. And for teachers with average level of empathy, the question "what did you do?" is above the question "how did you do?"; and the process of interaction, support, assistance is poorly expressed. For teachers with a low level of empathy, the technique of "one-sided monologue" prevails, and as a result, students' academic performance is lower than in other disciplines. The results of the experiment confirmed the hypothesis of the research, which establishes the probability of involving the teacher's empathy in the academic achievements of a student as high.
