Abstract

This article examines some problematic aspects of the official statistics of the number of suicides in Kazakhstan, through an appeal to the analysis of the reliability of suicide statistics. By searching the relevant literature in all available databases, the selection criteria, statistical data on suicides are considered. The data from the available databases of official statistics of suicide attempts and facts are given. The problem of reliability of statistical data is posed, which can lead to premature conclusions about a decrease in data on suicide mortality (and vice versa), namely, incorrect classification of causes of death, and a significant increase in unintentional deaths from 2019 to 2021 against the background of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since there are few studies, and about half of them ended up underestimating suicide data, it is concluded that the reliability of suicide statistics is questionable and requires additional research. The question is raised about the development of a national standard
