The issues of excessive mobile phone use among adolescents were discussed. The development of information technology has led to every person owning their own smartphone. The constantly updating functionality of modern smartphones and the multitude of applications increase the interest of every developing individual. In this regard, to form competencies, people become engrossed in their capabilities, causing concern in various fields of science. The use in the educational environment has great potential, as the phone becomes a cause of conflicts, hinders the learning process, and leads to competition. The use of the Kazakh-language version of the PUMP (Problematic Use of Mobile Phone) questionnaire allowed for the identification of structural components between the use of various communication applications on mobile phones for different purposes and in educational activities. Active participation in social networks turned out to be a predictor of problematic phone use. The results of the study show that excessive mobile phone use negatively affects personal development and academic activities. The study involved 130 students studying in the pedagogical specialty at Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University. The age ranged from 18 to 19 years.
